All radiators in all cars have some level of electrolysis associated with them. Given the expense of the Aluminum race radiators and some of the past issues with leaking due to electrolysis, we now offer a cost effective solution. This radiator cap has a piece of magnesium that dangles into the radiator and acts as a sacrificial piece of metal to attract the electrolysis to the magnesium instead of your expensive radiator.
Typically a race car will race less than 1% of its life, the rest of the time it is sitting and waiting on the next track event. We choose now to swap out the normal radiator cap and put this radiator cap on for storage to eliminate the damage to the Aluminum radiator and allow the magnesium to be teh sacrificial piece that will get damaged.
You can race with this radiator cap in place if you wish. The magnesium is plastic coated on the outside so that it will not damage the radiator under hard cornering.
For radiators like the 1.6L Springfield Dyno with the cap directly above the tank then we use a magnesium chunk attached via a spring that is expandable to get the magnesium deeper in the radiator if desired. On radiators like the Springfield Dyno 1.8L radiator where the filler neck is not located directly above the tank, we have a version where the Magnesium is attached via a chain so that it can make the sharper corners associated with the filler neck being offset from the tank.
It is recommended that you check the Magnesium part monthly to monitor how aggressive the electrolysis is in your car.
What is electrolysis? Electrolysis is a chemical reaction produced by current that can gradually destroy metal components and ruin the cooling system.
This cap is available for both 90-97 cars as well as the 99-05 cars. Since the 99-05 cars has the radiator cap offset the spring Radiator cap setup will not work, so we use a stainless steel chain instead to allow for the Magnesium element to be dropped down in the radiator.
